Timeline: Just after Uchiha Shisui’s death, but before the Uchiha clan massacre.
History: To understand Itachi’s story it’s first important to know the background of the ninja village that he was born in, Konohagakure, and the way the Uchiha clan is intricately laced up within the the village’s history and founding.
The Uchiha clan is descended from the eldest son of the sage of six paths, who inherited the Sage’s eyes. When it came to deciding would by the Sage’s successor, the eldest son’s thinking that power would be the way to bring peace was rejected in favour for the younger son’s idealogy that love would bring peace. This rejection left the elder son with jealous and hatred which was passed through the generations to form something ‘Tobi’ describes as a ‘Curse of Hatred’. The Uchiha, from the elder brother, and the Senju from the younger eventually became two of the strongest clans in the ninja world.
It came to a point where whenever the Uchiha clan were hired for a mercenary job, the Senju were generally hired by the opposing side. Eventually, it was the Senju clan who approached the Uchiha’s, tired of fighting wrote up a peace treaty. At the time, Uchiha Madara was in control of the clan as the most powerful of the Uchiha, and was firmly against the idea, however he was outnumbered, and eventually the two clans joined to form what is now Konoha, selecting Hashirama as their Hokage. Madara was quick to see from this that the Uchiha clan were being ‘ruled’ by the Senju, but despite his usual power over his clan members, they saw through the war-mongering attitudes and turned their backs on his ideals.
After Madara defected from Konoha that the Second Hokage offered the Uchiha clan a position as the ‘police force’ of the village, and although a few people suspected that this was in order to keep an ‘eye’ on the clan, although nothing was done to allay worries that this was the case.
Years later, during the Third Shinobi War between several villages, Itachi bore witness to many things that left him traumatised. As a direct result of the horrors of the war, he began to develop a very clear sense that peace was the only way forward, and began to strive toward a world without the violence he had seen.
After the Kyuubi attack on the village that ended the lives of many ninja, and the Fourth Hokage that fingers were pointed toward the possibility of an internal attack from a member of the Uchiha clan. Unrest was already apparent in and around the clan, and it was about this time that the members of the clan related their experiences back to the things that Madara had told them, and soon they began to make plans to overthrow the village and take back power.
During the slow planning of a coup d'etat Itachi rose throughout the ranks not only of the Uchiha clan, but all of Konoha. Graduating from the academy at the age of 7, and mastered the Sharingan in the year following. His success continued, and he passed the Chuunin exam at the age of 10, before finally being made an ANBU captain when he was 13.
As a member of ANBU, Itachi was asked by his clan to spy on the village. To relay information back to them to help their coup d’etat, however his real alliance was with Konoha, which was why when he was asked by the village to spy on the Uchiha clan he agreed to be a double agent. Knowing the Uchiha clan’s plans to create a ‘false’ peace through violence and exertion of power Itachi firmly believe in the village, and worked entirely for the village against his own clan.
Although Itachi tried his hardest to be able to come to some kind of peaceful truce between the clan and Konoha, the belief of the clan in him began to pale when he began to miss meetings, and spoke out against the ideals of the clan. The final string of trust was broken when he assisted Uchiha Shisui in his own suicide. After having given one of his powerful eyes to Danzo, he entrusted the other to Itachi before ‘taking his own life’ in a vain attempt to prevent conflict, or give both the village and Itachi more time to come to some peaceful agreement. As a result, Itachi was blamed for Shisui’s murder, and in the few weeks that followed Sandaime’s attempts at peace-making continued to fail, and Itachi was given the order to massacre the entire clan by Danzo. It was shortly before he carried out the massacre that he happened upon ‘Tobi’ and planned to allow him to ‘help’ with the massacre in return for leaving Konoha well alone.
Personality: Itachi is an incredibly perceptive and skilled ninja, quick to rise through the ranks he is not only praised for his abilities, but also his quick, and often incredibly forward thinking. Although he was dedicated to bringing peace to Konoha, and spent many hours training to both better himself and to try and come to agreements with the Uchiha clan, he found plenty of time to be a doting brother to Sasuke.
From an early age, Itachi looked after his brother with great care. During the Kyuubi attack he told his baby brother that he could protect him no matter what, even though he himself was too young to be considered a ninja. Itachi’s love for his brother was probably a very difficult thing for him to deal with, especially in the weeks leading up to the imminent Uchiha massacre.
As a fast-thinker, Itachi is almost never caught off guard, or surprised by much that happens around him. His foresight often allows him to read situations, and he tends to know the outcome of them before they come to fruition.
Itachi has also been influenced deeply by a few key people and events in his life. The Third Shinobi war which left him traumatised, also left him with a deep-seated desire for peace which drives him to make most of the decisions that he’s made to date. His best friend, Uchiha Shisui has also been a very influential person to him, and he carries many of the words that Shisui spoke to him in his heart, including the notion of self-sacrifice, ‘a nameless shinobi who protect peace from within its shadow’. He swore to carry Shisui’s legacy, and protect the eye entrusted to him to keep the will of fire burning.
Overall, although it seems that Itachi is quite serious and closed-off, it is out of necessity. Keeping secrets from his clan has left him with a need for a hard outer shell, one that he even managed to keep up around his much-loved younger brother Sasuke as he neared the time for the massacre.
Abilities/Additional Notes: Itachi is renowned for his ability with all types of ninja abilities. He is quick enough that when making hand seals even those who possess the sharingan struggle to follow the gestures, although Itachi tries hard not to engage in fights.
Itachi possesses the Sharingan and also, Mangekyo Sharingan, earned after ‘killing’ Shisui.
Amaterasu; Black Fire
Tsukiyomi; the ability an opponent in an illusion which feels to the victim like that have been trapped for three days, leaving Itachi able to torture them repeatedly in only moments.
Susanoo; Creates an ethereal defender, which attacks and defends on Itachi’s behalf.
These abilities are incredibly effective, however the use of the Mangekyo negatively affects Itachi’s eyesight, and would potentially leave him blind.
Third-Person Sample:
It wasn't uncommon for Shisui to invite him out this late at night, even after a full day of training and mission preparation he had enough energy to hop from roof to roof through Konoha. The hubbub of the village's daily life had long disappeared, and although there were still a few families milling around, most of them were indoors, beating the chill that night would bring after a hot day, putting their children to bed, eating a late dinner or relaxing after a day's work.
Sometimes, when Itachi let himself be aware of the simple lives of the villagers of Konoha - he felt an odd twinge in his chest that was difficult to ignore. With no secrets, no long-standing grudge against the rest of the village, no need to excel, no innate abilities, no worries but their own, the villagers had what he, as an Uchiha could never achieve, not for himself. It was the peace he wanted to keep hold of. Working in the shadows would bring peace, and he was determined to find a way to attain that same peaceful life of the villagers for everyone in Konoha, including the Uchiha clan of the future.
Shisui helped. He had a friend who was old enough to fully comprehend the situation they were in, and who shared his every fear for the future of Konoha. Spending time with him wasn't always as easy going as the older nin's personality, but most of the time they spent together he could manage to refocus all his thoughts on whatever it was they were doing. It never truly went away of course, but he helped.
A few quick steps, and a little more chakra sent to his feet left Itachi running through Konoha by Shisui's side, and he glanced over briefly, before looking out across their village, at Hokage Mountain, at the long shadows the low sun cast. "Where are we stopping?"

[Although he’d instinctively picked up the device he’d found only centimeters from his hand when he’d come-to in this place he knew was not home, he hadn’t properly inspected it until now. It hadn’t taken long to learn that it was in fact a device used for communication and despite it’s obscurity, he’d been reassured that using it would not bring about the Fourth Shinobi War. Thank you, Shisui.
There was a small smile when he finally clicked a button to start the transmission, and the expression fell off him seconds later when a red dot began to blink at the top of the device. He’d planned what he intended to say-- and without missing a beat he launched confidently into speech.]

My understanding of it is perhaps quite basic at the moment, although it would be interesting to see everything myself, If there is anyone who might be able to give a more in-depth account of this... world, I would appreciate hearing your story.
